First Light

by Thayer Sarrano

/

about

This is a collaboration with Marlon Patton and Richard Salino, two old friends from Georgia, who are both working out of New York now. They produced this song at Studio G in Brooklyn, and it was a joy and honor to get to make something with these guys.

I wrote this song many years ago in winter. The painting came first and helped me try to describe tiny moments of soft clarity.

lyrics

You were running through the woods, but the branches never touched you.
Because they, understood, you were lost with somewhere to be.

First Light, shined on the sheets, your pale skin and the snow outside. First light--I could finally see you, and everything was white.

You cried in my kitchen, you put daisies in my bedroom, you let the birds break the window.
My thoughts were not my thoughts cause they were caught in the draft of this cold house.

First light, shined on the sheets, your pale skin and the snow outside.
First light, I could finally see you, and everything was white.
